The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) launched the Arts Activation Fund as a pilot program to fund artists with innovative ideas for creating public art projects and cultural events in unexpected places and neighborhoods. In partnership with Mayor Garcetti's Great Streets Initiative, the Fund also seeks to target projects that enliven areas in and around the City’s designated Great Streets.
The Cultural Affairs department turned to Community Partners to help administer the $200,000+ in funding, assist artists with event logistics, and work with the artist-grantees on strengthening their business know-how, an effort to help make their work more sustainable in the long-term. We’re excited to work with the City on this effort and to see the impact it has on building and enlivening communities. About 8-16 projects are expected to be funded each year, and in 2016 have already included a pop-up multi-media installation in a vacant lot in East Hollywood, and a school yard in Watts that, for one evening, was transformed into a vibrant celebration of visual, spoken word and performance art.
