ÓRALE: Igniting a Movement for Immigrant Justice and Thriving Communities
In a landscape often characterized by fear and division, a powerful organization has emerged in the City of Long Beach- ÓRALE. ÓRALE (Organizing Rooted in Abolition, Liberation, and Empowerment) isn’t just an organization, it’s a vibrant, immigrant-led movement dedicated to dismantling the systems that criminalize immigrants, building a future where people are treated with dignity and not only survive but truly thrive.
Community Partners is proud to be a partner with purpose, fueling the creative solutions that advance more equitable, thriving, and inclusive communities. Standing in solidarity with ÓRALE and other fiscal sponsorship partners fighting for justice, and working to harness the power of the community to dismantle systemic barriers.
ÓRALE’s mission is clear: to end the unjust criminalization of immigrants and secure bold, transformative protections and opportunities for the Long Beach community. Their approach is rooted in their leadership, with lived experiences shared by those most affected, empowering immigrant voices to lead the charge for systemic change. They understand that the fight for immigrant justice is not just about policy but human dignity, equity, and the right to build a life free from fear.
“ÓRALE is unique, led by directly impacted people- we’re the closest to the issues and understand solutions to address community needs effectively. We are intersectional beings who are connected, our movement uses an intersectional lens to build power and systemic change in our community, leveraging strategic partnerships and diverse collaborations” said Gaby Hernandez, Executive Director, ÓRALE Organizing Rooted in Abolition, Liberation, and Empowerment.
Beyond the Criminalization Narrative
The current narrative often portrays immigrants through a lens of criminality, fueling harmful stereotypes and justifying discriminatory policies. ÓRALE directly confronts this narrative, highlighting the contributions immigrants make to society, their resilience, and their unwavering commitment to their families and communities.
ÓRALE works to dismantle this system at its roots by an intersectional approach focusing on immigration and health justice; economic, food, and health resources; leadership empowerment; and valuable partnerships and collaborations across community, civic, business, and philanthropic sectors including their EconomicLiberations Project, offering creative entrepreneurship programs with the City’s workforce development board, LBWIN.
Additionally, ÓRALE works with the City’s Health Department to ensure access to basic healthcare and ensure that wellness programs are easily accessible for all in the community. They continue to foster a network of leaders and advocates from within immigrant communities, providing the resources and support needed to organize and advocate for their rights. Through local collaborations, ÓRALE works with community and local partners for a rapid response network, creating power not panic, and ensuring families know their rights, are protected and prepared. And hopes to continue to grow and strengthen local advocacy efforts such as the Long Beach Justice Fund, providing legal support to immigrants facing deportation or criminalization. This includes collaborations with education institutions like LBUSD to bring “Know Your Rights” presentations to immigrant families in Long Beach.
A Vision of Thriving Communities
ÓRALE doesn’t just aim to dismantle injustice; they’re actively building a vision of thriving immigrant communities advocating and actively engaging with policymakers at all levels to push for legislation that ends the criminalization of immigration and secures fundamental protections, such as access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. They recognize the power of collaborative action and work alongside other organizations, advocates, and allies to amplify their message and create a unified front for change.
- Families can stay together: Ending family separation and ensuring families have the resources they most need.
- Access to resources is equitable: They champion policies that ensure all immigrants have access to the resources they need to succeed with dignity, regardless of their legal status.
- Immigrant voices are heard and valued: They prioritize the leadership and contributions of immigrants in shaping the future.
ÓRALE is a catalyst for change, a beacon of hope, and a testament to the power of community. Their work is not just about addressing the challenges of today; it’s about building a more just and equitable future for all. By dismantling systems of criminalization and actively cultivating opportunities for immigrants to thrive, ÓRALE is paving the way for a society where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
