Where Storytelling Becomes Healing: Generaciones en Acción Lifts Up Immigrant Voices in Los Angeles

In communities across Los Angeles, where stories are often shaped by struggle and resilience, Generaciones en Acción is creating something powerful: space.

Space for immigrant families to be seen.
Space for elders to be heard.
And space for healing to take root through art, culture, and connection.

Founded and led by immigrants, Generaciones en Acción brings together theater, poetry, documentary filmmaking, and wellness practices to elevate voices that too often go unheard. Their work is deeply intergenerational—engaging youth, adults, and elders alike—and grounded in a belief that storytelling is not just expression, but transformation.

“We don’t just tell stories. We create spaces where healing, memory, and dignity live in community. Through art, storytelling, and intergenerational connection, we support individuals and families in reclaiming their voice, strengthening their well-being, and building collective leadership.”
Patricia Veliz Macal, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Generaciones en Acción

At the heart of this work are four core pillars that guide every program, workshop, and gathering: Intergenerational Community Leadership, Mental Health and Socio-Emotional Well-being, Community Education, and Art and Culture. Together, these pillars reflect a holistic approach—one that not only uplifts stories but also builds leadership, fosters healing, and creates meaningful opportunities for learning and connection across generations.

Through this intermediary approach, Community Partners connects organizations like Generaciones en Acción to the support they need to grow, lead, and deepen their impact over time. Their inclusion in TLA reflects the strength and distinctiveness of their work—advancing equity through culturally rooted storytelling, healing practices, and community leadership.

A New Documentary Spotlight: Las Bellezas de Los Ángeles

This June, Generaciones en Acción will debut Las Bellezas de Los Angeles, a short documentary that brings long-overlooked stories into focus.

The film centers on Latina elderly women in East Los Angeles—immigrant elders who have quietly shaped their communities for decades as caregivers, cultural bearers, and sources of strength. Despite their contributions, their experiences are rarely reflected in mainstream narratives. Las Bellezas de Los Angeles changes that.

Through intimate storytelling, the documentary highlights both the enduring challenges these women face—aging, displacement, invisibility—and the profound resilience and cultural richness they embody. It is both a tribute and a call to recognize the dignity and legacy of those who have long been at the heart of community life.

Be part of this powerful moment. Attend an upcoming screening of Las Bellezas de Los Angeles and experience these stories firsthand—honoring the voices, resilience, and legacy of immigrant elders in our communities.

Building Community Through Art, Healing, and Leadership

At its core, Generaciones en Acción is redefining what community leadership looks like—centering creativity, cultural memory, and wellness as essential tools for change.

Through its four pillars, the organization creates spaces where individuals not only share their stories but also build the skills and confidence to lead. Whether through youth workshops, intergenerational storytelling, community education sessions, or cultural performances, each experience is designed to strengthen identity, support mental health, and foster a deeper sense of belonging.

Their vision extends beyond storytelling. Generaciones en Acción is working to mobilize immigrant communities across Los Angeles to become leaders in their own lives and neighborhoods—equipping individuals and families with the tools, confidence, and support to understand their rights, advocate for themselves, and pursue their personal, professional, and relational goals.

With support from Community Partners’ intermediary team, their work is part of a larger ecosystem strengthening grassroots organizations across Los Angeles County—ensuring those closest to the community are equipped to lead solutions that are responsive, inclusive, and rooted in lived experience.

Every workshop, performance, and gathering becomes an invitation: to listen more deeply, to honor lived experience, and to build a more inclusive Los Angeles where every voice matters.

“When we honor our stories across generations, we strengthen our communities and create pathways for healing, dignity, and collective growth. This work is about transforming lived experience into connection, leadership, and hope for future generations.”
